SAN ANGELO The good Lord came to take his good and faithful servant, Anita Ernst Thomas Thorn, home on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007.
Anita was born on Nov. 17, 1911, in the Bushdale community, near Rockdale, Texas, in Milam County, to Fred Henry Ernst and Ida Francis Stork Ernst. She and her family moved to Rowena in 1922. She married the love of her life, William Grant Thomas of Bronte, Texas, in 1938, in San Angelo, Texas. During her marriage she lived in many places, settling in Albuquerque, N. M., and later moving to Downey, Calif. When Bill preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1963, she returned to her home in Albuquer-que. There she married Edwin Thorn who preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1996.
She re-turned to San Angelo in 2000, living first in Baptist Memorials High Rise and later at Rio Concho Terrace.
Anita was preceded in death by her parents; sister Alma Straach Duggins and husband Sam; and brothers Henry Conrad Ernst and wife Evelyn McNiel Ernst, and Fred Adolph Ernst.
Survivors include her daughter, Nita Kay Thomas Navarette; granddaughters Rene Navarette Nowalk and husband Joe of Friendswood, Texas, and Christine Navarette Walker and husband Kevin of Hot Springs, Ark.; grandson Robert W. Navarette of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren Aubrey Nicole Harris of Memphis, Tenn., Brandon Nowalk of College Station, Pvt. Derek Walker of Fort Knox, Ky., and Tyler Walker of Hot Springs, Ark.; great-great-grandchildren Jasmin Harris and Emma Harris of Memphis, Tenn.; sisters-in-law Theo Hanz Ernst of San Angelo and Bernice Thorn Henson and husband Vernon of Lake Coleman; nieces Doris Ernst Wendland and husband Marvin of San Angelo, and Janice Ernst Reeder and husband Borden of Dublin, Texas; and nephews Ray Ernst and wife Laurette of San Angelo and Bob Ernst and wife Loryn of Garland, Texas. Numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and special friends including the Rev. Nathaniel Hankins and Bobby and Charlene Sturman also survive.
Anitas lifelong loves were her family, church and nursing career. Anita graduated from St. Johns nursing school in San Angelo in 1931. She left nursing to raise her daughter, returning to nursing later in life. Her favorite games were 42 and any other domino game. Many domino games were played by Anita. She won most.
Family visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2, at Johnsons Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Hankins officiating.

MERKEL - Rexel Orlan "Rex" Martin, 87, died Tuesday in Abilene Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Abundant Life Assembly of God with the Rev. Timothy Wiebe officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Starbuck Funeral Home.
Mr. Martin was born Aug. 1, 1911, in Artesia, N.M., the son of John William Martin and Orpha Postom Martin. He married Vada Turner on Sept. 5, 1958, in Abilene. He was a member of the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church. He was a carpenter and helped build the original Assembly of God church building. He was a volunteer fireman, delivered Meals on Wheels and a member of the Carpenters Local Union #1655. He played guitar and harmonica in a group that went and played at nursing homes and musicals in the community.
He is survived by his wife, Vada Martin of Merkel; three sons, Charlie Martin of Abilene, Johnny Martin of Merkel and Dean Martin of Killeen; one daughter, Billie Walters of Merkel; two sisters, Ova Hellwedge of Oklahoma and Eva Washburn of Scottsdale, Az., 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Obituary for Billie Walters
Billie F. (Martin) Walters 75 went to be with her heavenly Father Tuesday November 10 2009. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday November 14th at Abundant Life Church in Merkel with Reverend Joe Bushnell officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery directed by Starbuck Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Billie was born January 5 1934 in Merkel to Rex and Lois (Thorn) Martin. She married E.V. ?Buddy? Walters June 30 1951 in Merkel. He preceded her in death April 19 1994. Billie was an active member of Abundant Life Church where she was a Sunday school teacher ordained minister and missionettes leader. She had been a member of the Assembly of God Church in Merkel since it was founded. Billie worked at the State School for 10 years then was a home health caregiver until she retired. She loved to help others and often volunteered at the Outreach in Merkel. She enjoyed crocheting watercolor painting and making doll clothes. Billie loved her family.
Survivors include 5 sons Troy Walters and wife Vicki of Albuquerque NM Tommy Walters and wife Madelene of Waxahachie Wayne Walters and wife Connie of Merkel Earnie Walters and wife Traci of Merkel Ray Walters and wife Kellie of San Antonio; 1 daughter Leta Burkes and husband David of Merkel; 3 brothers Charlie Martin of Abilene Dean Martin of Killeen John Martin of Merkel; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) Vernon Talmadge Henson, 92, formerly of Warrensburg, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at the Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia, after a long battle with Alzheimers disease.
Vernon was born Aug. 15, 1920, in Wingate, Texas, the son of Emmitt T. and Della (Daniel) Henson, the oldest of five siblings.
On June 11, 1940, he married L. Bernice Thorn in Big Springs, Texas.
Vernon served with the 3rd Marine Division and bravely fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. After retiring from the service, Vernon moved his wife and two sons to Albuquerque, N.M., and began his 40 year career in the trucking business. He drove semi-trucks for APEX and Navajo Freight Liners. He was then promoted to Shop Foreman in charge of repairs and worked for several trucking companies before becoming Shop Manager for a chain of Freight Line truck shops.
Vernon retired near Abilene, Texas, at Lake Coleman where he and Bernice were able to visit with family and spend time fishing. In 2006, Vernons sons and family moved Vernon and Bernice to Warrensburg to be closer to family.
Vernon is survived by his wife Bernice; two sons: Ron Henson and wife Millie of Warrensburg; and Billy Henson and wife Shelia of Ozark, Mo.; one sister, Iva Oden and husband Tony of Lubbock, Texas; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville with Brother Charles Brant officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimers Association and can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
