Notes for Robert Doyle KELLEY

Robert Doyle Kelley
Birth: Dec. 6, 1930 Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas, USA
Death: Oct. 14, 2009 Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
Born to Robert William Kelley & Nora Ann Stinnett Kelley. Robert married Dorthy Inez Tucker in 1951. Children: Sheridan Lynn Kelley Jones, Robert Lane Kelley, Kerry Dee Kelley & Tracey Lea Kelley Richmond. The Kelley College of Business at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene is named in honor of this distinguished businessman and proud alumnus.
*********************************
From the Midland Reporter-Telegram, Oct. 18, 2009:
Our beloved Robert Doyle Kelley, husband and father, passed away on October 14, 2009, after a long illness. Husband of Inez, his wife for almost 59 years, father of Sheridan Lynn Jones, Robert Lane Kelley and Kerry Dee Kelley of Houston, and Tracey Lea Richmond of Atlanta, Ga., and seven grandchildren, Doyle is survived also by two sisters, Zelda Ann Williams of Fort Worth and Billie Jean Baird of Irving.
He was born in the farm country around Lamesa, Texas on the 6th of December 1930, and began schooling at age five in the Klondike School District. The early grades were at country schools in Wilson, Klondike and Key, and when Doyle reached the fifth grade the family of Robert and Nora Kelley moved from their farm to Lamesa, where Robert Kelley owned a Studebaker dealership. Doyle became fascinated with swing band music as a teenager and learned to play the clarinet.
After graduating from Lamesa High School in 1947, he entered Hardin-Simmons in Abilene and became a member of the Cowboy Band. He met Inez Tucker in 1949, and developed a dream of running his own company, graduating with a business degree in 1951, which was also the year he married Inez. The couple moved to Lamesa and lived there from 1951-54, when Doyle worked at his father's Studebaker dealership In 1954, he took a job with Shell Oil Co., which moved his young family to Hobbs, NM, and then to Midland.
By 1961, the West Texas oil boom was in full throttle and Doyle, working nights in his garage as a bookkeeper for small businesses, felt confident enough at age 31 to start his own factoring company that would eventually become KBK Financial Inc., a financing firm for struggling oilfield service companies. Within two years, his company had 30 clients, and by 1968, it was financing contractors in Alaska. He grew the business through a move to Houston in 1971 and eventually became the largest independent factoring company in Texas, with clients from Louisiana to California, many in oilfield-related businesses but also including truckers, ship chandlers, private nursing and travel agencies, even a perfume company. He sold KBK in 1992, to form a new company, Kelley-Tucker Inc., and became a private investor.
He devoted time to philanthropic interests that included the Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Country, which named him an honorary life director, and Hardin-Simmons, where he served on the Board of Trustees for nine years. In 1998 he received the university's John J. Keeter Jr. Alumni Service Award, the highest honor for an alumnus, and was honored with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In 2002, after he established an endowment for the university's business school, it was renamed the Kelley College of Business.
Throughout his life he was a devoted Baptist church member, serving on the deacon boards of the First Baptist Church of Midland, Tallowood Baptist and Second Baptist Church in Houston. He was an inveterate bookworm, loved biographies, books on business and investing, and amassed a world-class English Bible collection that included first editions of the King James Bible. In 2007 he donated an ancient Torah scroll to the Hardin-Simmons Richardson Library.
Mr. Kelley is to lie in repose from nine in the morning until six in the evening on both Saturday, the 17th of October, and Sunday, the 18th of October, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 19th of October, in the Sanctuary of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston. Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
