Notes for John Hamery ROBERTSON

Pvt John H Robertson
Birth: 1830 South Carolina, USA
Death: May 3, 1864 Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, USA
~In Memory John H. Robertson~
This is a cenotaph. John H. Robertson, a Confederate Civil War soldier lies in an unknown grave, with the location being unknown except to God like many a soldier. This is to give honor to his memory in the county he resided in, and here at Gary Cemetery where his his beloved wife Adaline Minerva (Gary) Robertson is in eternal rest.
John H. Robertson was born in 1830 in Alabama to his parents John Robertson (born 1795 in SC) and Cassandra "Cassie" Sisson, (born abt 1804 - died after 1850 in Rusk County, TX). Cassie married John Robertson, an honorable man, in December of 1821 in Habersham Co, GA. Her father Charles Bruce Sisson died in 1832. His will stated that he had already bequeathed to his beloved and dutiful son-in-law John Robertson his portion of Charles's estate. John became guardian of Charles's 13 year old daughter Mary Polly Sisson daughter, which speaks for the high esteem in which he held John.
John's namesake son, John H. Robertson (Aug 11, 1830 AL - May 3, 1864) was living in Rusk County, Texas, by 1851. John Robertson and Adaline Minerva Gary, were married Nov 6, 1851 Rusk Co, Tx. They moved to McLennan County which later became Bosque County, about a year later when Adaline's parents and three brothers moved there.
They became the parents of six children with much joy:
1. James F. Robertson: Born 1853, Bosque Co, TX. TWIN
2. Joseph Robertson: Born 1853, Bosque Co, TX. TWIN
3. Jeptha Marion Robertson: Oct 27, 1854 Bosque Co, TX - Nov 29, 1931 TX. Buried Rule Cemetery, Rule, Haskell Co, TX.
4. Jefferson M. Robertson: Jan 14, 1856 in Bosque Co, TX - Jul 8, 1889, Bosque Co, TX. 33 years of age. Buried in Gary Cemetery, Bosque Co, TX.
5. Sarah J. Robertson: Born 1858, Bosque Co, TX.
6. William Hasty Robertson: Jan 27, 1860, Bosque Co, TX - Aug 8, 1944 Bosque Co, TX. Buried in Clifton Cemetery, Bosque Co, TX. Headstone reads Hasty Robertson.
John and Adaline had about ten happy years together, raising their growing family, working hard on their farm, simply living their lives and being near their loved ones.
On Dec 20, 1860, South Carolina became the first of eleven states to secede from the Union. South Carolina then announced secession entitled South Carolina to any government properties. On March 14, 1861, Abraham Lincoln during his first inaugural address, left no doubt as to his intentions when he announced he would "hold, occupy, and possess" any property belonging to the federal government. On April 12, 1861 Brigadier Confederate General Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, with his troops. The Civil War had begun!
John Robertson made the defining decision of his life in 1861, as men were doing all around him. He left his beloved family, and with one of Adaline's brothers, Mathias "Mat" Elmore Gary, enlisted as a Private on Apr 2, 1862. They both mustered in on Apr 11, 1862, in Dallas, TX, in Capt. Anderson's Co, Hawpe's Regimentt, TX Cav, CSA, which was later designated Co. B, 31st Regiment, TEX Cavalry, CSA.
On the night of Sep 28, 1863, the troops under Mouton, with Speights brigade marched through the drenching rain and crossed the Atchafalaya River, then bivouacked on the east bank. The morning of the 29th about 7:00am, with rain still pouring, they marched for four and a half hours through the muddy swamp, one at a time in the line, until they finally reached their destination. They were about five or six miles west of the town of Morganza, LA, near the Mississippi River. A horrific battle followed with the Confederates attempting to run across a sugar cane field, and shoot Union soldiers to no avail with the cane so high, to having to finally cross in the open through a field of fiery death, with men screaming and shouting as they ran and shot and many fell. After fighting for over an hour, for what seemed an eternity to the wet, tired men, from the rain and stress and long march, they wavered but only for a short time. They heard Confederate troops advancing from a distance and had the spark within themselves to fight even harder and with a surge the Confederates won this battle and took over 400 prisoners, but at a terrible price. They lost over a hundred twenty-five to death and injury, and some were taken prisoner by the Union Army, including Pvt. John H. Robertson and Cpl. Mathias Elmore Gary. This became known as the Battle of Fordoche or the Battle of Sterling Plantation.
While a prisoner of war from Sep 28, 1863, under guard at Custom House John Robertson was ill with chronic diahrrea and in and out of the hospital. He wrote a pleading tragic letter to the US military Physician asking him to please give him medical help or he knew he would die:
Custom House
Nov 17, 1863
Dr. Ferguson:
I have been sick since my imprisonment and at the present time very low. I respectfully request that you will give me a parole for a few hours each day or in case you give me an interview you can perceive what will be best suited for my present suffering. I have been taking medicine nearly all the time but I don't derive any benefit whatsoever. I humbly request an interview as it is impossible for me to survive much longer under my present suffering. By doing so you will do me a great favor for which I hold myself forever grateful.
Yours RP
(Respectfully)
John H. Robertson
"B" 31st Texas Cavalry
Prisoner Of War
Custom House
April 10, 1864 he was sent from Custom House back to the same hospital deathly ill with variola (smallpox). John Robertson died on May 3, 1864 in St. Louis USA General Hospital, Ward 14, New Orleans, LA. His record states he was buried in General Hospital Barracks Cemetery, Grave # 518. There is no reference in Civil War records as to the location of a "General Hospital" or "General Hospital Barracks Cemetery".
The Civil War history references point to Confederate soldiers who died of illness being buried in Chalmette Cemetery (not the present one), which was covered completely over in later years by the surface of Canal Street, the main street in the city of New Orleans. Sometime after the was ended Union prisoners were reinterred in a military cemetery. Confederate dead were left wherever they were. Most of their burials were "unknown" forever.
Adaline, his beloved young widow, never got over the loss of John. Somehow she managed to raise their children, but she never married again. Two of her children lived in Bosque Country until their deaths, Jefferson Robertson, William and his wife Jessie Robertson, and some of her grandchildren, so she was close by her loved ones. She lived in Bosque County the rest of her days, died Oct 31, 1904, and was laid to rest near the graves of her parents and her son J.M. Gary on headstone (Jefferson M. Gary), on land that had belonged to her father William Whitten Gary, one of the first state appointed commissioners for the county in 1854.
Cpl. Mathias Elmore Gary was exchanged at Red River Landing, LA, on July 22, 1864. He survived the war and went back home to Bosque County, TX. Mat fell in love with a lovely widow from Illinois named Rachel H. Conway, and they were married on Christmas Day, 1867, in Bosque County. They later had children, and many hard years of struggle to make a living, and as the years passed he became indigent as did many survivors after the war, but they were together until his death in 1903. Mat died in Tom Green County, TX, perhaps they were visiting there at the time, but no grave has been found with his name.
Rachel lived with her daughter Cora Neely until her death in 1918 from heart trouble. There is a copy of her Death Warrant from the holdings of The State of Texas on her Find A Grave Memorial that documents she was buried in Scrutchfield Cemetery, Bosque County, TX.

In Memory of
Helen Ruth Kurburski
June 23, 1932 - April 10, 2013
Obituary
Helen Ruth Riley Kurburski went into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. She would have celebrated her 81st birthday on June 23, 2013. Helen was born in Ft. Worth, TX, to Raymond Calvin Riley and Esthma Monda James. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward James Kurburski.
Helen was a cherished mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She lived in England and Bermuda courtesy of her Air Force husband, but no matter where assignments took them, she created a home for her family and made many, many friends. After her kids and grandkids, Helen's passions were bowling, bridge, and the game show Jeopardy, which she tried never to miss. She also took pride in doing every job as thoroughly as possible, whether it was her work as a travel and transportation specialist for the DoD or serving as the secretary of the Austin Women's Bowling Association for many years.
After retiring in 1988, she loved sleeping late then spending time drinking coffee and watching the morning news shows. CNN and MSNBC kept her informed on trends in the market, so she always knew the price of oil and natural gas. In addition to bridge, Helen also loved to play poker. She won a gold medal in Texas Hold 'em in the Senior Olympics. There were many awards in both her professional and personal lives. She was extremely proud to have been a State Doubles Champion in bowling and a Life Member of AWBA. In recent years she fell in love with opera and attended Austin Lyric Opera productions as often as possible.
Helen's family would like to thank Dr. Prashanth Adapala and the exceptional staff at the ADC Main Clinic Infusion Unit for the extraordinary care she received during her treatment. Special thanks to the angels from Hospice Austin whose knowledge and skill are only exceeded by their kindness and empathy.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Helen at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Cook-Walden /Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
Those who would like to honor her memory may make contributions to Bowlers to Veterans Link (www.bowlforveterans.org).
