Notes for George WILFONG

In the book "Historical Sketches of Wilkes County", Published by John Crouch in 1902 it states....

"Trouble for the Tories

James Coyle and John Brown, two notorious Tory plunderers, passed through Lincoln county and robbed the house of Major George Wilfong of everything they could carry away and then made ofi' with a couple of his horses, using the clothesline for halters. Major Wilfong with a party following the culprits, overtaking them near Wilkesboro, recovering the horses, but the ruffians made good their escape. Major Wilfong left the halters made of his clothesline with Cleveland, with which to hang the rescals, should they ever be captured. Not long after, as they were returning to Ninety Six, they were captured by some of Cleveland's scouts and brought to Wilkesboro and Col. Cleveland had them hung with Wilfong's clothes line on the oak tree that is yet standing just north of the court house in Wi1kesboro."

"THE CLEVELAND OAK

The old oak tree that stands north of the court house and in front of the old I. T. Prevette residence is a relic of Revolutionary times when Colonel Cleveland was engaged in suppressing the Tories. Several Tories were hung to this tree by Cleveland and his associates. Among the number was Captain Riddle and two other Tories who had previously captured Cleveland at Old Field and would have killed him doubtless, had it not been for the timely rescue by his brother Captain Cleveland. There was several other Tories hung to this tree. Coyle and Brown, two notorious horse thieves were hung there with the clothesline they had stolen from Maj. Wilfong and converted into halters to lead away Wilfong's horses."

In the book "Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots: Volume 4", it states....

WILFONG George Maj Old St Paul's Church Cemetery, Catawba County, North Carolina

George Wilfong (1740-1818) served as major in the 2d regiment, Rowan County, North Carolina troops. He was born in Germany; died in Catawba County, N. C. George Wilfong (1740-1818) was appointed major by the Provincial Congress 1776.

Youth Killed As Trio Plan Hunting Trip
'Empfy' Rifle Brings Tragedy in Accident
Three Roberts Island youths at 9 o'clock last night eagerly prepared for a deer hunting trip today.
Less than three hours later one of them was dead in a freakish "empty gun" mishap.
Fatally wounded was Edward Walter Avila Jr., 20, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Walter Avila, of Rt. 5. Box 143, Howard Road.
Treated at Emergency Hospital, Avila died at 11:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Hospital. after many transfusions failed to save him from a stomach wound caused by a .32 caliber hunting ri?e.
STORY OF ACCIDENT
Here's what his two teen-aged conipanionsCarl Babbit, 18, of Rt. 6, Box 597, and Ronnie Del Carlo, 15, of Rt. 5, Box 166 ~told Sheriff's Capt. Denzel Troute, in Del Carlo's home where the tragedy occurred:
Babbit asked Del Carlo where his gun was. Del Carlo said it was under his bed, but warned the former that if he was going to handle it to be positive he removed the three cartridges in it.
Babbit said he pumped out the three cartridges, then pumped it several more times. No more shells were ejected. so he closed the breach.
PULLS TRIGGER
Raising the rifle, Babbit noticed the hammer was cocked. He pulled the trigger. The weapon fired.
In the living room adjoining the bedroom, Avila grabbed his stomach and cried:
Oh my God, I've been hit."
Del Carlo and Babbit said they carried Avila to the formers station wagon and sped to Emergency Hospital.
Transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital. Avila was administered 14 pints of blood in an hour--but to no avail.
He died from liver and heart injuries, doctors said.
PLASTER CUTS
Avilas body also was covered with small wounds caused by flying plaster.
The victim was sitting on the arm of a chesterfield discussing the hunting trip when the bullet ?ew through the wall into his back and out the front of his stomach, his friends said.
Before he died. Avila contirmed his companions' story, Troute said.
AVlla's body was taken to B. C. Wallace and Sons Mortuary.
