Mary E. Gilliam Purcell, 99, of Amarillo, heard the angels calling her to her heavenly home on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
Services will be at 3 p.m. on May 7, 2011, at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with Dr. Chester Beavers and Pastor Bradley Spears officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Purcell was born Sept. 6, 1911, in Overton to Carrie Baker Gilliam and George W. Gilliam. As a young girl, she grew up on a farm in Weatherford, where her family owned a dairy, raised chickens and sold milk and eggs to the local grocery stores.
During most of her life, she worked as a men's tailor and seamstress. In the 1950s, Mary owned an alteration shop and provided service for all the men's clothing stores in Downtown Amarillo. After closing her shop, she was employed in the men's alteration department by Harry Hollands, White & Kirk, Sakowitz and Colberts Harry Holland and retired in the mid-70's at the age of 76.
Mary loved to garden and sew and was busy making aprons until her death. She was a member of Southwest Baptist Church and loved listening to gospel music, Each year, Mary would read her Bible from Genesis through Revelation.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, James R. Purcell in 2005; and three brothers, George Gilliam, Menard Gilliam and Hamil Gilliam.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Purcell and wife Barbara of Amarillo; a daughter, Doris Adkins and husband William Adkins of Sweetwater; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105.

William "Bill" W. Adkins, age 80, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 17, 2011, at Broadway Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Bill was born February 21, 1931 in Loco, Texas. He was a truck driver for many years before retiring. He also was a member of Broadway Baptist Church.
He was survived by his wife, Doris Adkins of Sweetwater, Texas; one daughter, Mary Stene and husband Michael of Chocataw, Oklahoma; one son, Kenneth Adkins and wife Pam of Abilene, Texas; four grandchildren, Kimberly Emslie, Dennis Stene, Christina Adkins and Molly Adkins; six great grandchildren, two sisters, Katie Bess Crawford of Amarillo, and Sue Boggs of Chocataw, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Wyatt Adkins, Morris Adkins, and sisters, Estelle Adkins, Elizabeth Baker and Bonnie Adkins.

Edna Bernice Shaw, born Aug. 20, 1943 became an angel June 24, 2010. She was the beloved daughter of Willie and Jewell Arter.
She is survived by her husband, Dave Shaw, sister, Lillie Beckett; and brothers, Willie Arter, Eddie Arter and Gene Arter.
Also surviving are her children, Angie, Terry, Bobby Temples, Penny Rapp and Todd Temples; grandchildren, David Jr, Daniel, Valarie, Brandon, Layoee, Cody, J.T., Milo and Skye; and great-granddaughter, Mercedes.
She fought a great fight with breast cancer, but ultimately lost the war.
She was a beloved wife and mother and will be missed greatly, writes her family.
