Notes for Johann Heinrich WEIDNER

Molly, October 16, 1741 Rotterdam, Holland - Deal, England - Philadelphia, PA Thomas Olive, Master Columns represent:
Captain's List (includes all men from 16yrs+), Age, Those free from disease and to be landed, Those taking Oaths to Government
Hendrick Wdener 18 Johann Henricheyner Johann Henrich Weydner
Conrad Widener 27 Philip Conrath Weydner Philips Conrad Weydner
This information is from the book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Ralph B. Strassburger and William J.Hinke, published in 1934 by the Pennsylvania German Society, Norristown, PA. The spelling is as it appeared on the different lists and the names are listed in the order they appeared on the original lists. A blank indicates that that person wasn't on the next list. I have aligned the names so they are on the same line of each list. Again - the order was not changed.
*Many ships are only listed with men, yet many came with their wives, children, sister, etc, but these names were either not recorded or not saved. Only males over the age of 16 were allowed to sign the oaths, so these would be the names on Strasburger & Hinke's lists. The early ships before 1727 you most likely will only see the oaths lists. As time went on and the captains were forced to record all passengers, you will often see the entire list of males, females and children. The law to record these was passed in 1727, but obviously not enforced until later. Other places you may find ship lists not recorded in S & H might be Philadelphia newspapers of the time.
Generously donated by Ken Gissy

The Story of the Painted Tree Henry Weidner (Whitener) was one of the first settlers in present day Catawba County, arriving there about 1750. The Warlick and Moll (Mull) families arrived soon after. At first, the Indians were very friendly, but during the French and Indian War, they became hostile. Around 1760 Abraham Mull and one or two of his children were scalped and massacred by the Cherokee. Mary Mull was out on the farm and escaped to Henry Weidner's home to warn him of the attack. The families on the West bank of the Catawba quickly fled the area for safety - some say to South Carolina, others say to Cabarrus County, NC Before the white families left, the friendly Catawba Indians painted a tree trunk red and agreed to keep it that way until it was safe for the settlers to return. This tree would be a sign of warning for the white settlers. One night, while checking on the safety of returning home, Henry Weidner and Daniel Warlick, Jr. were camping under a tree when Indians attacked them. Weidner and Warlick made a run for their horses. Weidner was in the lead shouting for Warlick to follow him. When they reached a swamp area, Warlick took a short cut and his horse became mired in quicksand. The last Weidner saw of his friend was Warlick trying to fight off the Indians using his gun as a club. The Indians killed young Daniel. A few days later, a party of men returned to the scene. They came upon the tree where Weidner and Warlick had camped. It had been painted red.
