Notes for Lafayette KING

HISTORY OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY
CHAPTER XIV.
GRAND RIVER TOWNSHIP.
LAFAYETTE KING

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post-office, Bale City).

There is no better farm of its size in this community than the one which Mr. King own;, his home tract especially being a place superior to many. This contains 160 acres, upon which he raises the grains indigenous to this section, and with a good supply of timber and abundant water facilities it is well adapted to stock-raising; all his stock is of a high class. Mr. King was born in Boone county, Mo., May 16, 1835, of Kentucky parentage, for his parents, James and Keziah (Penick) King, were both natives of the Blue Grass State, coming to Boone county, Mo., in an early day. The former, after a lifetime devoted to agricultural pursuits, died in 1859 at the age of 63 years; his wife had preceded him to the grave in 1840, she then being some 40 years old. Nine children blessed their happy married life, of whom Lafayette, as the youngest, was perhaps the most favored one. At any rate he received a good education in Boone county, and, upon leaving school, began life as a farmer, having gone to California in 1854, working in Placer county, that State. After remaining there some five years he returned to Missouri and since that time he has adhered closely to farming and stock-raising, and with what success is very evident from a glance at his present possessions. He first came to Livingston county in the summer of 1858, but went back to Boone county a year later, not settling permanently in this county until the summer of 1860, and he has since resided upon his present farm. March 5, 1853, Mr. King was united in marriage with Miss Charlotte Cameron, daughter of Joshua Cameron, a Canadian by birth and of Scotch descent, but subsequently a citizen of Livingston county, and by occupation a farmer and blacksmith; he married Miss Sarah Garvin of this State, though of Kentucky ancestry. Mr. and Mrs. King have had seven children, five of whom are living: Lecroy, Robert, William, Marion and Nellie. Eugene and Minnie are deceased. Mrs. King died in 1875. Mr. K. was married again in 1881 to Miss Jane Street of Ohio. She is a member of the M. E. Church South, of Grace Church, in this township.

Notes for Ambrose LYTHE

From: Elisa Lyth, Fomblinz@@aol.com
Date: 26 Mar 1997

LYTH, KING:
My great-great-great-grandfather, Ambose LYTH settled in Boone County at some time unknown to me, married in 1841, and died in Columbia MO in 1853. I have found no one with the surname Lyth in any of the lists on the home page. Are any tax records to which I can be refered. My ultimate goal is to place him in Boone county at some particular date in order to make my search of naturalization records easier.

Response:
The only reference I found was in the 1882 History of Boone County by Switzler, page 362, in the section California Emigrants: "The following list, alpabetically [sic] arranged, embraces the names, as far as known to us, of all Boone County emigrants to California in 1850. No doubt there were others whose names we were unable to obtain: ... Ambrose Lythe."

Additional:
A living Ambrose Lyth who is a distant relative of mine claims to have a copy of a marriage certificate of Ambrose Lyth and Mitilda KING, (daughter Charles KING) dated September 30, 1841, Boone County. Ambrose died June 11, 1853 in Columbia. One of four sons, James Ambrose Lyth was born in 1844. He died December 14, 1923 in Hale, Carrolton County. The emmigration to California also makes sense to me because my branch of the family homesteaded in the Gadston Purchase, moving from California to Southern Arizona. Can you think of any way to reconcile these claims. Is there any reference to settlers named King? Did a Mitilda King go to California? I wonder if Ambrose Lyth deserted his family as I am told that his wife and children ended up living with her brother James King.

Additional:
In the same section there is reference to Charles King and George N. King going to California, no reference to Mitilda anywhere. Switzler also has a bio on Charles G. King on p.595. He traveled to California for 2 years and then returned to Boone County. Quite an endorsement and other family information. Several other references to C. King(s) in this reference.

Additional:
Today I received from Ambrose Lyth, my second cousin once removed, the information related to Lyth's in Boone county. Ambrose Lyth, his wife Matilda and four children are listed on lines 37-42 (page unknown) in the 1850 census, District # 8. He apparently was a blacksmith. Matilda Lythe is listed in the 1860 census, page 42, line 17 as living with her brother following the death of Ambrose. The wedding record was found at the Boone County Courthouse, Book of Marriages, Book A, page 221. Two sons emmigrated to California to work on the railroad. James Lyth lived and died in Carroll county. Another son moved to St. Charles county (?). I would appreciate it if you incorporate this information into the BOONE County homepage.
