HENRIETTA HERZBERGER

Aubrey Davis, Jr. attended Occidental College. He served in the Army during World War II in India, the Burma Theater and at the Pentagon. In Washington, D.C. he met and within a few days married Henrietta Herzberger (Retta). The marriage was performed by Peter Marshall, the Chaplain to the United States Senate . They settled in Mercer Island, Washington after the war. He founded Gaco Western, a company manufacturing surface coatings (roofs, decks, etc.). As the company matured, he was able to turn the day to day operations over to others, maintaining his involvement on the Board and as a shareholder. He also was instrumental in the founding of Group Health Cooperative. He remained active in government, chairing Warren Magnusan's last campaign for the United States Senate. He was on the Mercer Island City Council from 1967-1978, serving four of these years as Mayor. He ran for the King County Board Presidency in ___, a position ranking second to the governor in Washington. This campaign was a family affair, with all his children devoting their energies; unfortunately, he lost. He then served, under the Carter administration, as Assistant Secretary for Transportation for the Northwestern region. In his 70's he returned as Chief Executive Officer of Group Health, a 60 plus hour a week job running one of the largest health care organizations in the country. Aubrey also served on a number of "blue-ribbon" panels including chairing that reviewing the sinking of the Interstate 90 floating bridge to Mercer Island and that evaluating health care options for the State of Washington.

Retta was, from 1960 to 1983 a teacher at West Mercer Elementary and Mercer Crest Schools. She worked as a volunteer at the Science Center. The family maintained a beach home at Shelton. In 1991 Aubrey and Retta celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

He told me your Great Uncle always cared about my grandmother and his wife never stopped being jealous of my grandmother. Notes for Mordester Ann GREEN

Her name is unusual! Her father was preaching a sermon about Mordecai and Ester on the day of her birth. From these names he derived Mordester! She deplored the name and went by the nickname Dot. One wonders about the sermon. Ester (Hadassah) was adopted by her cousin Mordecai after the death of her parents
